Sunshine Action is one of the only charity organization that will back you up on a background-check from major multi-national corporations, and even boost your future career. Even for someone being accused of a crime, the organization would consider to issue an official Certification or Mitigation Letter to the judge, specifying his/her contribution to society. Sunshine Action welcomes creative & innovative ideas in the charity field, and we give you the freedom to create your own project and proposal. We support the Sunshine Ambassadors during the planning, coordination and execution of these approved projects. So, you don’t need to only follow Sunshine Action's original programs, but you also have the freedom to develop your own projects based on your own passions - a freedom that is almost non-existing in other charity organizations. DJIBOUTI Africa Volunteer Tour DJIBOUTI For the past decade, Djibouti has been recovering from an internal conflict that was settled in 2001. This civil strife caused a considerable increase in the incidence of rural poverty, which resulted in loss of life, lost livestock, problems with social and economic infrastructure, and migration of farmers and pastoralists. During this recovery period, the rural population has often depended almost entirely on emergency food aid. ETHIOPIA Addis Ababa - ETHIOPIA Volunteer Tour Ethiopia is one of the World’s poorest countries. Out of a population of around 80 million (2008) people, 35 million people are living in abject poverty. In one of the world’s poorest countries, where about 44 percent of the population lives under the poverty line, more than 12 million people are chronically or at least periodically food insecure. Most of them live in rural areas with agriculture as their main occupation. With 80% of Ethiopians dependent on agriculture as their main livelihood, severe arid conditions due to persistent lack of rainfall coupled with civil disputes have worsened Ethiopian poverty. UK BUILDING PROJECT Project Info During the summer of 2021, our interns have been planning a building project for Sunshine Action. They have researched and come up with designs for a portable shelter for the homeless. This project aims to provide a mobile shelter for those who experience homelessness. It will contain basic necessities such as blankets, food and water. During the COVID-19 pandemic, street sleepers are more likely to be at risk as they have little means of protection from the virus. Building mobile shelters would alleviate some transmission amongst the homeless population. Moreover, these shelters would protect the privacy and dignity of rough sleepers, who are faced with strong stigmas and are often associated with substance abuse. Occupying public areas may make them feel uncomfortable, leading to poor mental health. Providing shelters can offer them a safe space. The main function of these shelters would be as an emergency measure for those who cannot afford or are struggling to find a home for a short period of time. We hope to incorporate regular charity or fundraising events to raise awareness of this issue and dispel some of the stigma surrounding homelessness. Research and Design Our interns have carried out extensive research into existing designs for similar mobile shelters. You can see the full design process in the PDF at the bottom. We have also researched planning requirements in the UK and hope to put this project into action over the next few months. We are looking for charities that may be interested in partnering with us to construct these shelters or to run them once they have been built. INDIA In November, 2009, 4 Sunshine Action volunteers went various places in India for the Charity Mission. They donated over 3,000 kg of rice, over 1000 kg of DAL, 800 kg of Potatoes, as well as others food products and medicines. During this trip, Sunshine Action benefitted over 1,725 cases/families, equivalent to over 2,174 individuals. During this trip, volunteers visited and donated food and other mateirals to M.C. Nirmal Hriday and M.C. Premdam in Kolkata. Sunshine Action also visited the Leprosy Centre in Seemapuri and sponsored a medical instrument specialized for Leprosy operation. Volunteers also visited Vrindavan, where the Guild of Service has a house to care for displaced widows. Vrindavan is known as the City of Widows due to the large number of widows who move into the town and surrounding area after losing their husbands. According to some Hindu traditions, upper-caste widows may not remarry, so many of those abandoned by their families make their way here. There are an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 widows living on the streets, many of whom have spent over 30 years there. They also set up the first Sunshine Action Medical Camp in the poorest village of India in cooperation with Rotary Club of Calcutta Uptown & Country Women's Assoc. of India in Kaoradanga Village. Sunshine Action provided medicines, vitamins and medical camp to cover 156 patients, including children and adults. In November, 2012, 7 Sunshine Action volunteers went to India to donate food, medicine, wheelchairs and other materials. Sunshine Action also contributed to several building projects for those in need. During this trip, Sunshine Action collaborated with 10 centres/organisations, and benefitted over 2,360 people. In February, 2014, the Sunshine Action volunteers traveled to Calcutta, India, and donated food, clothes and basic materials as well as provided student sponsorship money and building construction materials to several local organizations. Volunteers visited four children’s homes and provided aid to handicapped children. A visit to one of these centers, where children once condemned to death are given a second chance, is a profoundly moving experience. In 2016/2017, Sunshine Action once again volunteered with Missionaries of Charity.
