- Fortune Bag (HK) | Sunshine Action
Sunshine Fortune Bags This was the first official program of Sunshine Action in 2008 and remains our biggest project after more than a decade. We started with the simple concept that "Everyone Needs to Eat", called our donations Fortune Bags, and used the Festive Seasons as a motivation to donate. From 2024, the Sunshine Action weekly events are in reels at the Sunshine Action Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sunshineactionhk The History of the Sunshine Fortune Bags The Fortune Bag Program packs and distributes bags full of rice, pasta, dry foods, sauces, toiletries, and other necessities to low-income individuals supported by our partner beneficiaries. The Sunshine Fortune Bag Program is the biggest program in the organization, which focuses on poverty relief. The Sunshine Fortune Bags have been distributed in many countries & regions around the world, including UK, USA, Canada, Vietnam, Kenya, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Mongolia, India, Macau, Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam & the Philippines in the last 17years. In 2023, Sunshine Action is struggling to financially sustain all programs, including the Fortune Bag Program. Your contribution would mean a lot to us. Donate now! The first charity organization Sunshine Action donated Fortune Bags to was the HK Women Workers Association and its sister organization, Cleaning Workers’ Association. At that time in early 2008, there was no minimum wage in Hong Kong. Most cleaning workers made an average of only HKD$3,500-4,500 per month (USD$450-580). Many struggled to pay rent and sustain their families but could not apply for social welfare support. When Sunny started the Sunshine Fortune Bags program in 2008, there were only a couple of volunteers each season to pack all bags. They borrowed the office from HK Women Workers Association to store the food. Volunteers came on Saturdays and Sundays for 3 consecutive weekends to pack the bags. Sunshine Action did not have its own office until 4 years later. This was the humble beginning of Sunshine Action, the world's smallest charity organization. The Fortune Bag Program has since expanded outside of Hong Kong. Sunshine Action began providing Fortune Bags in Macau in 2011. Fortune Bags have also been distributed in Vietnam, Kenya, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Mongolia, India, Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam & the Philippines. Occasionally, we also donate to local charity kitchens in bulk. In addition to distributing Fortune Bags, Sunshine Action has donated food to the poor through the following organizations: Blue Sky Food Assistance Serv. Project Crossroad Foundation Feeding Hong Kong Food Angel Food Grace Foodlink Foundation Food for Good Food Friend Action Greener Action J Life Foundation K.T. Methodist Cleaners Community Food Bank Christian Action Kitchen for the Refugees Missionaries of Charity Nam Cheong shelter St. James Settlement People's Food Bank YWAM Food Bank Tuen Mun Fortune Bag Records The biggest Sunshine Fortune Bags program conducted in a single morning was during the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2020, donating over 7,500 Sunshine Fortune Bags for the poor and elderly in Hong Kong, through 70 local centres. The heaviest Sunshine Fortune Bags were packed during September 2020 for Mid-Autumn Festival and World Food Day, with each bag containing 9-10 items and averaging 9 kg (or roughly 20 lbs) each The most expensive Sunshine Fortune Bags were made in May 2019 for Mother's & Father's Day. Each bag included 9 items and was approximately worth HKD$300 (USD$40). A total of 3,000 bags were distributed (total market value of HKD$900,000 or USD$120,000) during this period, making it the single most expensive program ever done in the history of Sunshine Action! Student and School Involvement Sunshine Action works with schools to fundraise, package and distribute Fortune Bags. We have conducted the Fortune Bag Program in the following schools or the events are organized by the students from: University of Chicago, Illinois, USA 芝加哥大學 University of Oxford, UK 牛津大學 UCL University College London, UK 倫敦大學學院 UCLA University of California , Los Angeles 加州大學 University of Pennsylvania 賓夕法尼亞大學 University of Toronto, Canada 多倫多大學 Phi Gamma Delta NYU New York University, US 紐約大學 University of St. Andrews , Scotland 聖安德魯斯大學 University of Cambridge , UK 劍橋大學 University of Georgia 喬治亞大學 The Backpack Project Athens Miami University at Oxford 邁阿密大學 , Ohio, USA Chinese University of Hong Kong 香港中文大學 Loughborough University 拉夫堡大學 Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, New York, USA DBS Diocesan Boys’ School 拔萃男書院 CIS Chinese International School 漢基國際學校 Kowloon Wah Yan School 九龍華仁書院 Yew Chung International School 耀中國際學校 Hong Kong International School 香港國際學校 Canadian International School 加拿大國際學校 ESF King George V School 英基英皇佐治五世學校 ESF Bradbury School 英基白普理小學 ESF Beacon Hill School 英基畢架山小學 ESF Kennedy School 英基堅尼地小學 ESF Discovery College 英基智新書院 ESF Renaissance College 英基啓新書院 ESF West Island School 英基西島中學 Stamford American School Hong Kong 史丹福美國國際學校香港 How Do Schools Help? Schools can help support the Fortune Bag Program in several ways: Hosting an event – Fortune Bag events require a venue and space for short-term food storage. Most food purchased by Sunshine Action would arrive 2-4 days before the packing event and normally in pallets. The items do not need to be stored inside rooms, but preferably under a roof to avoid potential rain. Schools must provide space for assembly lines to pack Fortune Bags. The open space should be fit for at least 6 assembly lines, with 3 long tables for each line. Fundraising and collecting donation items – items must be collected for distribution prior to the packing event. The target for donations should be the target number of Fortune Bags x 3-4 items per bag. These items must be at least 6 months from expiry date and not be stored in glass containers. During the pandemic, protective masks and other anti-pandemic items are also welcome. Schools can also create fundraising events to support the purchase of items for donation. On average, the school and students involved collect 50% of the donated content and Sunshine Action covers the remaining 50%. - Our Story | Sunshine Action
OUR STORY On January 1st 2008, three volunteers founded Sunshine Action with nothing but heart and one mission: to serve those in need. During one of the toughest economic crises in Hong Kong, our founder used his own salary to purchase 100 packets of rice, which were donated to 100 struggling workers. From that day, Sunshine Action has come a long way, committing to operate fully on volunteers and donations. Having worked with 30 organizations in only its first year, Sunshine Action has grown tremendously. Today, it is estimated that Sunshine Action has helped over 430,000 people directly, reaching more than 24 countries worldwide, and partnering with around 950 other charitable organizations. Moreover, we've greatly expanded in volunteers since our launch, having had more than 10,000 individuals working together for this mission. We take pride in the many events and programs which Sunshine Action have hosted over the years, mainly in our Fortune Bag and Street Sleepers programs. Sunshine Action continually works to expand and globalize, with bases in both the United Kingdom and the United States, and by working with interns to further the vision established at the heart of the charity. We stay committed to serving those in need. The UN Sustainable Development Goals Sunshine Action has many different programs around the world. Our programs address 14 of the 17 UN sustainable development goals, with a main focus on no poverty and zero hunger. - Vietnam (GLOBAL) | Sunshine Action
Information about our recent and previous work in Vietnam VIETNAM Intro In the coming June 2024, Sunshine Action & Doctor of Excellence is partnering to conduct some charity and healthcare programs around Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. Local partner organizations: - Sisters of the Lovers of the Hole Cross Congregation of Cai Mon, LHC - Gia Dinh Tinh Thuong Te-Phan (The Orphanage) Mission of the Trip 旅程目的: - Food distribution for the poorest of the poor. 購買、包裝食物包,並運送至貧民 - Visiting & volunteering in several local organizations - Providing Health Check and others health related programs 1. Promotion of health awareness: The health check-up program is designed to provide medical assistance to local Vietnamese communities that lack access to healthcare facilities. The program aims to promote a deeper understanding of health conditions and educate individuals on preventive measures for both infectious and non-infectious diseases, as well as the maintenance of good physical health. Through the program, individuals can increase their health awareness and acquire knowledge about hygiene maintenance. This program is an initiative that seeks to address the healthcare needs of underprivileged communities and promote overall well-being. 2. Provision of professional advice and guidance: A DOE doctor mentor will be in attendance to offer expert advice for local villagers based on their health check results after examination, which includes guidance on daily healthy routines, nutritional recommendations, appropriate physical activity, and strategies for managing a healthy lifestyle, to assist local residents in enhancing their well-being. 3. Early detection of health issues: A comprehensive health check that includes an assessment of body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and other relevant indicators can facilitate the identification of potential health concerns. This screening may detect hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions before they become symptomatic. Prompt intervention and management of these conditions can significantly reduce their impact on an individual's health. Therefore, this health check up is the first step to maintaining optimal health and wellbeing of the local residents in Vietnam. The SUNSHINE STUDENTS SPONSORSHIP program in Vietnam (2013), sponsoring 30 childen on a yearly basis... this is the first time we met them personally in the villages. Since 2008, SUNSHINE ACTION volunteers have been in VIETNAM almost on yearly basis consecutively for the following programs: - Food & basic material distribution for thousands of poor, including severely sick, handicapped, etc... - Toilets for the handicapped & poor elderly - WATER PUMPS to provide clean water for the villagers - FREE MEDICINE for the poor. Sunshine Action Medicine program covers approx. 12'000 cases per year. - New Bridges for the villages - Visit & Food for the Orphanage - PLANT the PLANET : follow SUNSHINE ACTION tradition to plant trees everywhere the volunteers go.
- Save the Sea (HK) | Sunshine Action
SAVE THE SEA Project Info In 2010, Sunshine Action started the Save the Sea program which promotes: Restocking the ocean by releasing small fishes and other aquatic life to their respective native regions. Healthy environment for aquatic life (e.g., with mini artificial reefs) Responsible aquaculture Cleaner beaches Fishing in Hong Kong and how Sunshine Action Helps Hong Kong is comprised of a single peninsula and over 200 offshore islands, on the southeastern coast of Mainland China. Hong Kong is home to a diverse aquatic habitat with rocky shores, coral reefs and artificial reefs. Hong Kong also has a relatively high diversity of fishes, with over 1000 recorded marine fish species. Unfortunately the region also faces an overfishing threat. In Hong Kong, the fishing rest period lasts 2 months, and in China, the fishing rest period lasts 2 and a half months. These short rest periods results in overfishing, which then leads to the depletion of resources, low aquatic life growth rates and low biomass levels. According to a 2008 UN report, the world's fishing fleets are losing US$50 billion each year through depleted stocks and poor management of fisheries. The purpose of this program is to restock the ocean with fish. Sunshine Action does this by releasing native fishes to their local waters. The fishes are released near an artifical reef, which is a protected area which is under continuous supervision of the Hong Kong police. The program takes place in the summer, which is about the same time when species of smaller fish (which are released) have their hatching season. Till date, Sunshine Action has released more than 118,800 indigenous small fishes and aquatic creatures into the the Ocean, including: Yellow Tail Star Snapper Marbled Rockfish Rabbit Fish

- India (GLOBAL) | Sunshine Action
INDIA In November, 2009, 4 Sunshine Action volunteers went various places in India for the Charity Mission. They donated over 3,000 kg of rice, over 1000 kg of DAL, 800 kg of Potatoes, as well as others food products and medicines. During this trip, Sunshine Action benefitted over 1,725 cases/families, equivalent to over 2,174 individuals. During this trip, volunteers visited and donated food and other mateirals to M.C. Nirmal Hriday and M.C. Premdam in Kolkata. Sunshine Action also visited the Leprosy Centre in Seemapuri and sponsored a medical instrument specialized for Leprosy operation. Volunteers also visited Vrindavan, where the Guild of Service has a house to care for displaced widows. Vrindavan is known as the City of Widows due to the large number of widows who move into the town and surrounding area after losing their husbands. According to some Hindu traditions, upper-caste widows may not remarry, so many of those abandoned by their families make their way here. There are an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 widows living on the streets, many of whom have spent over 30 years there. They also set up the first Sunshine Action Medical Camp in the poorest village of India in cooperation with Rotary Club of Calcutta Uptown & Country Women's Assoc. of India in Kaoradanga Village. Sunshine Action provided medicines, vitamins and medical camp to cover 156 patients, including children and adults. In November, 2012, 7 Sunshine Action volunteers went to India to donate food, medicine, wheelchairs and other materials. Sunshine Action also contributed to several building projects for those in need. During this trip, Sunshine Action collaborated with 10 centres/organisations, and benefitted over 2,360 people. In February, 2014, the Sunshine Action volunteers traveled to Calcutta, India, and donated food, clothes and basic materials as well as provided student sponsorship money and building construction materials to several local organizations. Volunteers visited four children’s homes and provided aid to handicapped children. A visit to one of these centers, where children once condemned to death are given a second chance, is a profoundly moving experience. In 2016/2017, Sunshine Action once again volunteered with Missionaries of Charity.
- Digital Inequality | Sunshine Action
DIGITAL INEQUALITY Project Info During the summer of 2021, our interns have undertaken a research project on digital inequality in the UK. The research looks at the correlation between digital exclusion and poverty, including the impact this has on homeless people. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated the digital divide. During the lockdowns, we relied more and more on the digital world as a means of living and working. Many public services and charities had to close their physical premises and move some of their services online. Those lacking digital literacy have thus been further isolated from essential services. Although it has been reported that the majority of homeless people own a mobile phone, the closing of facilities such as libraries, museums and cafes during the pandemic made it extremely difficult to charge these devices. A lack of internet access poses a challenge in accessing vital information and services, including where to pick up food and finding temporary accommodation. Our interns carried out extensive research into the current situation in the UK and the effects that digital exclusion is having on the homeless population. They noted decreased opportunities to socialise, a lack of access to essential software, a negative toll on mental health and fewer employment opportunities. We have presented our findings in a White Paper on Digital Inequality. Please feel free to read our research and suggestions below: EMBED PDF HERE IF POSSIBLE
